Are computer graphics getting good enough to replace actors in movies? If it is are we going to see dead actors act again... John Wayne westerns again I wonder?

Mastodon May 30th, 2008 I don't think that will ever happen, there is a theory known as the uncanny valley that predicts that if robots or computer images become too lifelike, we will begin to fear and hate them. One of the reasons the CGI movie "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" failed so badly at the box office (forcing its studio to shut down) was because the characters looked "too human".

Also westerns have been on the decline since the 70's and John Wayne, would not be considered attractive enough to receive leading-man roles nowadays.

Forever May 30th, 2008 The Uncanny is a well known Freudian concept, its the same reason some people fear dolls and clowns - they resemble humans yet are not and people can find this unnerving.

Not that I think this would be the case with films as people would associate CGI with cartoons rather than real people no matter how real they looked because of the context of being at the cinema or watching television.

I just don't understand why films should strive to be more realistic when they can just use normal actors. You can see realsim everywhere but I go to the cinema for escapism and would prefer surreal or abstract CGI like that used in MirrorMask.

As for the revival of dead actors I don't think a market would be big enough for that kind of film production. A youth market would rather watch a contempory star such as Brad Pitt, over John Wayne whom they may not have even heard of. It's an issue of identification with modern figures and John Wayne just isn't famous anymore.
