Are you using Adblock or Adblock Plus?
Adblock for Mozilla has not be updated in ages:

Wikipedia sould not be included as an ad block...it has to do with firefox and your permissions on your security...you could always switch search engines

I use Adblock Plus v0.7.5.4 and have Firefox set to aout-update the extensions.

jerv: does the problem persist if you disable AdblockPlus? Did you change the default settings for AdblockPlus, particularly for the Wikipedia site? Can you observe this problem on another site? Are you using at least Firefox 2.0 ?
I just installed Adblock Plus v0.7.5.4 on my Firefox 2.0.0.14 with EasyList (USA) as subscription filter. Wikipedia pictures are shown in my configuration.

jerv: I found also the following information about popups: "If a user on Mozilla Firefox with the Adblock Plus extension installed cannot see the popup, only the normal tooltip, Adblock Plus may be blocking the operation of navigational popups. This can be solved by adding an exception to the filtering rules - go to the Main Page, right click the icon in the status bar and check Disable on en.wikipedia.org." No pop-up, no warning banner on top.
Firefox 2.0.0.14
I only have one copy of it installed, but my PC has two profiles. When I log into WinXP under her profile and lauch Firefox from there, the images show normally; only my profile is affected. Both profiles have Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4
Disabling Adblock Plus does NOT work :(
I've checked the "blacklist" a few times, though is disabling it entirely doesn't work then it's kind of moot.

Whatever it is is on my profile only and (apparently) unrelated to AB+.

jerv: you could try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox.
