To recognize our very best contributing members, we award them Levels as they reach certain numbers of Points. It's easy to "Level up" at first, but it gets harder each time, so give as many good answers as you can to level up quickly. When you make it to higher levels, you'll see the following changes:

    • Your Badge may change
    • Your Title may change
    • The number of points that your votes are worth may change

The more votes you receive, more your level will increase, and the louder your voice will be on the site.

    Example member listing:
    AB-Joel
    Authority, 800 pts

    Points: 800
    Level: 16
    Badge: Level Badge
    Title: Authority

The CURRENT levels on Answerbag are as follows:

    1-2 : Beginner
    3-4 : Novice
    5-9 : Contributor
    10-14 : Wiz
    15-19 : Authority
    20-29 : Expert
    30-39 : Professor
    40-49 : Brain
    50-59 : Sage
    60-69 : Maestro
    70-79 : Guru
    80-89 : Swami
    90-99 : Genius

Now, I'm not sure exactly when this answer was posted, but the reason it had the chance to earn so many points is because, as I remember, it was the FIRST reply to actually answer this question.

Levels are a clever method of addicting you to AB, as are points. Initially you move up levels with as little as 40 points. Currently, It takes about a 1,000 points to move a level above 40+. You will get thru the first ten levels very quickly. You can hold your cursor over the bag in your profile to see how many points you need to move up a level.

There is no limit as to how many people may occupy a level, and points are what moves you up. They are free. Give lots away!

The real measure of your status is your RANK in AB.
This is also on the profile page. Only one person can stand on a rung of the ladder at a time. As distinguished from badge numbers where many people may hold the same level.

Hang in there, its a fast moving board.

{After reading all the very simple, factual answers, do you fail to see the subliminal methods being used to keep the rats (US) pushing the lever?} (That is a joke. But it is also reinforcement/learning theory at work. )

My percentage was 90%, then I saw no negatives in my point report, but my percentage went down to 89%? I don't understand this? I don't have very many negative points as apposed to positive, yet I am at 89%, can you explain how this works?

For me it would be going down the list- of questions and find one that I hope I might could share a different view - and be looked at in another light- And if I help someone or they help me other's show there support by giving point's and that's how we get rated! -- My name is Pattijo

The levels in Answerbag are a point status that is awarded to the users currently in Answerbag. The leaderboard was also made to stand currently the top users in Answerbag. Points are awarded through questions, answers, and moderation on a user's account.

    EDIT

No one has done this before in this question for an answer, so I guess that I will do it then.
As you level up, your ratings increase, the higher you level up, the higher your ratings. It seems to go like this...

    +1 on answers
    Lv. 3 Novice +2
    Lv. 13 Wiz +3
    Lv. 23 Expert +4
    Lv. 32 Professor +5
    Lv. 43 Brain +6

    +1 on questions
    Lv. 5 Contributor +2
    Lv. 26 Expert +4
    Lv. 40 Brain +5

    -1 on answers
    Lv. 49 Brain -5

    -1 on questions
    Lv. 9 Contributor -2
    Lv. 47 Brain -5

I can't remember the rest, but I will try to later on. Any help is aprreciated!

Levels within AB serve to easily identify ones commitment to the site. A higher level represents that member's effort to contribute meaningfully has been recognized and accepted by other members.

---- MODIFIED ANSWER: with some corrections ----------------------

    1) The more active and the more appreciated you are on AB (with also some part of luck), the more points you get.
For some bigger amounts of points, you get a new level.
This amounts grows with your level. For any Answerbag user, you can calculate the total amount of points needed for their *next* level. In their profile, section "his / her point", add the current "Points" total and the "pts until level [next level]".
For instance, at the moment, I have 45658 points in total, and I need "2228 pts until lvl 65".
So, to reach level 65, you need in total:
    45658 + 2228 = 47886 pts

    2) Usually, something particular happens when you reach a new level:
    - every 5 levels and later every 10 levels you get a new title
    - the amount of points that you can give or take to answers and to questions grows. These are the 4 numbers on the "My ratings" table on your profile. Usually, just one of them will be growing at a time.
After you reach the "Sage" title, those amounts do not change anymore, they stay by:
    ans ques
    Helpful Rating +6 +5
    Not Helpful Rating -5 -5

    3) latest change in level organization (end of Spring 2007):
at that time, AB has rised (about doubled) the number of points that you need to get a level. But everybody were allowed to keep their levels.
So if you were 1 point from the next level before the change, you needed to double your points after the change to get the next level.
    As a consequence:
    - many people after this change were still playing for points, but not much for levels, because they needed a huge amount of points until their next level.
    - a long time after this, in the all time most points leaderboard, some people still had higher levels or titles (and could give and take more points) than others with the same number of points.
    - people who had not reached the amount of points needed for their level had a black bag.

It was at first said to be 60 in the past. Now, it just seems that new levels are being created along with titles and badges. The levels can extend as long as an AB user continues to thrive. Firebrand is our best example.

One thing that I have seen it do is to validate opinions..points show agreement/appreciation.
It is nice to agree and not feel alone in how one thinks. I am not talking about the questions that need statistics and facts but those that just simply ask what you think on the matter. It feels good to find similiar thoughts even if they are not perfectly matched.
It does a level thing that I think the majority go up in and if you spend enough time on AB and are not offensive, mean, rude or crude... you will climb.
    It is fun!

Over time, they change your rank or number here. If you go to your "Profile and Activity" area, click on "About Points and Levels" on the left top bottom, and it explains it all there.

Points are used to rank questions and answers. You give points to provide feedback to others. As you accumulate points, your rank on the site, your badge, and your level will change. The number of points your feedback is worth will also change.

I cant believe you are a Level 9 Contributor and don't know that. Anyway, when you ask questions or give answers which others on AB (Answerbag) like or agree with, there is a chance they give you some points (Mind you, they MIGHT give points). They either mark it as Helpful which earns you points or Not Helpful which takes away your points. These points are added totally and the number of points you have decides your level on AB. The points you lose or gain depend on the level of the people who marked your answer or question.

I think AB is the only questions and answers website with a seemingly never-ending number of levels. On Yahoo Answers, the highest level is Level 7.
