You could have done a white towel test. Dampen a white face towel and simply rub it across the carpet in a high traffic area. If the towel looks real dirty then the carpet was either not cleaned or poorly cleaned. Some systems will clean better than others. For residential plush carpet cleaning, the manufacturer recommended cleaning is the Hot water extraction (steam) cleaning method. For different methods used look here
