    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

How often a carpet needs to be cleaned depends on what is causing its wear and tear. For families with pets and smokers, it is best to get the carpet cleaned around twice a year. In homes with one or two nonsmokers and no pets, the carpets should be cleaned once a year.

I was in the carpet cleaning business from 1980 till 1992 and find that vacuuming the carpet as often as possible is the best thing you can do to protect your carpet investment. We always told our customers to clean the carpet at least every 6 months in the traffic areas, this all depends on how much traffic and how much soil you get on your carpet. I think that the best way to have a carpet cleaned is with a pre-spray and rinsed with a steam cleaning machine with no chemical feed ( rinsed with just hot water)

The EPA has a study for carpet cleaning. Residential carpets should be cleaned at least every 12-18 months by a professional. As a professional cleaner myself, I recommend my clients have their carpets done at least once a year.
