Stores that sold cloth used to have two brass tacks exactly 36 inches apart stuck into their counters so they could quickly measure out cloth by the yard. They also had tacks at the 1/3 and 1/2 yard marks. So, when people were ready to buy their cloth, they'd "get down to brass tacks" to find out the price.

Brass tacks is an object used in the expression "get down to brass tacks". The expression usually means clearing out confusing details and finding out the real facts about something. +4
