No, actually it shows very good judgment on your part. It's your relationship - not anyone else's.
As long as the person you are engaged to doesn't mind that you aren't announcing it. I think it's up to the both of you when you announce it. I do think though that when you are ready to announce it, both of your families should be the first ones informed.
