    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Computers are a part of everyday life. Kids start learning to use them before they even go to school, and the toy stores are full of laptops designed for children. These computers come with a wide-range of capabilities. There are computers designed for preschoolers and computers made for teens. When testing out a laptop for your child, consider the features, but also factor-in the price and how long it will be before the child outgrows it.

    Sturdiness and Realiabilty

Read user reviews of the laptop online, paying special attention to how parents rate the sturdiness of the computer. Unbiased reviews can be read on consumer review websites, as well as on sites that sell the product. Do not read reviews directly on the manufacturer's website because they will likely only publish positive reviews. See what other parents have to say about how long the computer has lasted, and look for patterns of parents complaining on similar issues, such as batteries dying quickly, a mouse needing to be replaced or problems getting parts covered under the warranty.

If you can get your hands on the actual laptop before purchasing, look at the screen, the keys and any attachments to get a feel for whether or not it will hold up with your child. Look at the mouse or touch pad. Will your child be able to handle it easily? If the mouse is attached, check to make sure the cord is not flimsy. Look at how the laptop is powered. Many computers for young children run on regular batteries, but those for older kids may need an A/C adapter. Make sure the A/C adapter seems long enough to allow the child a bit of movement while using the computer. Look at the screen. Is it bright enough for your child to read easily? Make sure the graphics are up to your expectations. Check the volume. Some kids computers have annoying music in the background, so make sure that volume is adjustable.

    Acess and Software

Some kids laptops only come with pre-installed, pre-approved software, but others have Internet access. Be sure that the Internet access is limited to specific, kid-safe sites. If the laptop has Internet access, make sure parental controls are available to limit the amount of time the child spends online. Be sure that you have control over which sites the child visits and that these controls are password-protected so that your child cannot change them.

Check the software available on the computer. Many kids computers focus on teaching early reading and math skills, but some also have games. Play the games yourself to be sure that they line up with the values you are teaching your child. Some games may be violent or may simply be too advanced for the age of your child. Make sure that all games and lessons available are age-appropriate.
