    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Horatio Allen constructed the prototype for the headlight in 1831. His prototype was used to illuminate the train track, and it warned of the train's approach. The first headlights appeared around 1838 on trains. These first headlights were oil-burning and allowed the observer to see about 50 to 100 feet ahead of the train.
