    According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders (NINDS), cerebral palsy is a disorder caused by the brain's inability to coordinate movements between the nerve, the muscle and the brain. Moreover, evidence of cerebral palsy typically begins to produce symptoms by the age of 3. Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common form of cerebral palsy.

    Symptoms

    Symptoms of spastic cerebral palsy range from stiff muscles, tremors, inability to coordinate movements and drooling or difficulty swallowing.

    Diagnosis

    Diagnosis of spastic cerebral palsy may include a brain scan, lab tests and an electroencephalogram (EEG), which can determine the brains electrical activity.

    Risk Factors

    Pregnant women who deliver prematurely, have twins, triplets, multiple babies in one pregnancy, babies born with low birth weight and breech births are at a higher risk of developing cerebral palsy

    Treatment

    Although there is no cure for spastic cerebral palsy, there are some medication that may help control the symptoms and relax the muscles. Physical and occupation therapy treatments my be prescribed by your physician.

    Complications

    According to the Mayo Clinic, complication that can occur from cerebral palsy include contractures: "Severe contractures can result in joint deformities or dislocation." Additionally, malnutrition, mental retardation, seizures and incontinence can occur.
