According to Dr. David Delvin, a general practitioner and family planning specialist, the most common cause of impotence among teenagers and young men (up to 30 years old) is anxiety, which is commonly brought about by fear of impregnating a woman.
The physical causes include deterioration of the arteries, exhaustion, smoking, obesity, excessive alcohol intake, illegal drug intake (such as cocaine), injury in the brain or spinal cord, major surgeries and hormone problems.
Symptoms of impotence include loss of sexual desire, failure to keep an erection long enough during sexual intercourse, difficulty in having an erection, premature ejaculation, and failure to ejaculate or reach orgasm. Occasional difficulty is considered normal, but those who experience frequent and prolonged sexual problems such as these should consult a physician.
Impotence can affect a man's self-esteem. Most young men who suffer from erectile dysfunction avoid sexual intimacy with their partners. It affects their social abilities, job or school performance and behavior as a whole.
If you are suffering from impotence, you should seek the help of a doctor. The doctor will be able to identify the likely cause of your condition. There are some things that you can do to avoid impotence: exercise, improve your diet, control excessive alcohol intake, manage stress and quit cigarette smoking.
For impotence caused by either physical or physiological conditions, the doctor may prescribe medication, surgery or psychotherapy. Erection-aiding drugs include Cialis, Levitra, Viagra, Caverject and MUSE. Mechanical aids include vacuum pumps, rings, external splints and vibrators. Surgical methods include curing a venous leak (or leakage in the veins) and inserting splints inside the penis.
According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse, erectile dysfunction is treatable not only among young men, but among all men of any age.
