News: Getting to the Points
Help answer this question below.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), a component that attaches to connective tissues such as collagen and elastin, to make cartilage. HA has several beneficial uses in addition to creating cartilage. HA retains moisture and helps maintain the levels of synovial fluid that cushions joints. Injections of HA directly into arthritic joints can provide pain relief for up to nine months for some people. When used regularly, HA can delay the onset of arthritis and stiffness that occurs as we age. HA is becoming widely used by cosmetic surgeons, because it plumps up skin and retains fluid. HA might also be used in place of collagen for some procedures such as plumping the appearance of the lips. Restalyne is one name-brand version of HA used for cosmetic purposes. Most HA used for medicinal purposes comes from rooster combs that contain the highest known levels of HA. The effects of injected HA last about nine months versus the oral supplementation that lasts from two to four months. The body eventually breaks down HA so regular use is required for pain relief or other benefits.Cushioning
