I'm definitely scratching my head about that one. Not even the prize committee's justification made much sense. I can understand the Time Magazine Man of the Year, or whatever, but the Nobel Peace Prize? If anything it's more of a detraction than a recognition.

According to Thorbjoern Jagland, the Nobel Committee chairman, it is because "he has been able to change the international climate. Some people say, and I understand it, isn't it premature? Too early? Well, I'd say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now. It is now that we have the opportunity to respond — all of us."

    So, there's your reason.

    2nd Answer.

Do you think drug tests are in order for each member of The Nobel Prize Committee?

This decision could only have been made by people on acid.

Here is the entire announcement from the Nobel Prize Committee:

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.
Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world’s leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama’s appeal that “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”

In truth,he doesn't deserve it. He has not done one thing he said he was going to do. It was given to him because he's the first black president. Period

He didn't do anything to deserve it and neither did Al Gore. The Nobel Peace Prize has lost all of its meaning. It is completely worthless now.

"Obama's election and foreign policy moves caused a dramatic improvement in the image of the U.S. around the world. A 25-nation poll of 27,000 people released in July by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found double-digit boosts to the percentage of people viewing the U.S. favorably in countries around the world. That indicator had plunged across the world under President George W. Bush."

Maybe people will stop hating America, he is working to help this country.
I never saw this much hating on someone for no good reason.

Kissed the ass of every country we ever had issues or wars with. Promised a country to make it better, to the tune of another 800 billion in debt. Paid acorn 800 thousand to buy the votes..and, well hell anyone that voted for him needs to stop whining. Had anyone read up on the man, they would have known he was not worthy of being president. Crying over spilled milk just gives you more to mop up.

i was just watchin the news... he was nominated "within days of being voted to office". he himself said "he does not deserve to be in the presence of the the rest of the nominees". and from what they said on cnn he was nominated for "changing the climate of world peace" (whatever the hell that means????) so basically he did nothing and doesnt deserve it but his tokenism earned him a meaningless prize.

<sarcasm>It's not what He did, it's who He is. The Great One is the New Messiah, and only He can lead us out of the wilderness of war, poverty, and lack of medical care. Only He can bring peace and hope and unity to a world gone mad with hate and strife. The Media and the Nobel Committee can see this clearly. Why can't you?

Funny thing is, that when I first saw a headline today about Barrack Obama getting the '09 Nobel Peace Prize, I didn't think about why. I just thought "cool, go USA". Then when I get to work, virtually everyone was miserable and bitchy. The first thing the guy next to me says is "You won't believe what bs is going on [today]. Obama got a Peace Prize!?". My only thought then was "Jeez, can't we be proud of ourselves for at least one day....that our President won a significant award?" (When I say "our", I mean U.S. citizens)

He was the best choice this year. The Nobel Prize for Peace is given to those who reach across the world and dilengently work on behalf of peace. It is stated in the Nobel Mission. It is given to encourage those principles.

He has opened the doors to peaceful negotiations with those that fear and hate us starting with is first overseas speech to Egypt and he continues to this day.

Not only is the lack of accomplishments troubling, how can a man prosecuting 2 wars in the middle east, as well as authorizing drone attacks into Pakistan, be celebrated as a man of peace? The entire world has to be scratching it's head.

Oh, lots of things, I'm sure. Let's see, uhhhhh, ummmm, well, he was a community Organizer. Maybe that's what it's for. Or maybe because he embarassed his country by bowing before the king of a nation that hates us???? That was impressive. Or, maybe because he gave away 800 billion dollars to a bunch of rich guys.

    3rd Answer:

How about this for a reason for his prize:

I know you know of someone that kisses someones rearend just to get on their good side, right?

Since President Obama is the most powerful human on the planet, do you think this committee gave him this prize, simply to get "brownie points" for their part of the world?

    I dislike a__kissers very much.

According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee he has show a lot or promise with his ideas towards global peace.

IMO promise is not enough! I want to see results!

Now, remember this was NOT his idea, it was awarded too him, therefore he is in no way to blame, also he is only 10 months into his term, in 3 years we may be wondering how the heck the Nobel Committee knew he would be so influential in global peace (and then again, we may not!)

Did this answer your question? If not, then ask a new question or create a poll.

You're reading Can someone explain to me, what Obama did to earn the Noble Peace Prize? - which can also be phrased in the following ways:

  • Why did mr Obama get the Nobel Prize for Peace when he has only given speeches, two wars, more fuel to Islam vs 'The West" a generic term that covers Xtianity, support for Israel, and is one -sided about the Crusades and their terror
  • What did the president do to get The Nobel Peace Prize?
  • Why does Obama deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? Put atleast a minutes worth of thought into it.
