I think a majority of people in the 20th and 21st century are bored, dont have much responsibility, and just have problems with everything to occupy their time.

Humans have a long history of inflicting pain on one another. Some have been more at the receiving end. So it may just bring the pain back if we just joke about some things. A victim of rape recoils at the mention of the word let alone a joke about it. No doubt, some people are oversensitive, but some people have been through a lot too.
