A hefty fine; minimum of $500 and a class where they learn how truly dangerous it is to text while driving; and what damage they could cause themselves or someone else. A film that shows all the footage like the stupid guy in California who was driving the disabled when he slammed into the van in front of him and any other footage of damage done by an idiot that was texting while driving (or otherwise engaged) with interviews from family members who've lost a loved one to a fool who killed someone while texting. At the end of the class (should inconvenience them with classes for at least one day a week for 2 months); they should be required to sign a contract stating they have gone through this course and if there is ever a second offense, they will lose thier licens for a year; no questions asked. Good question by the way.

This past Thursday, The New York Senate voted to outlaw texting while driving and is looking to set fines at up to $150. Unfortunately, they would only impose them as a secondary offense if the driver is pulled over for breaking another law. I'd like to see it taken even more seriously myself.

I think they should have their drivers license suspended just like a drunk driving charge and given a $1000. fine. While texting they are as equally impaired as they would be while drunk, in my opinion.

I think it should be a mandatory 6 month DL suspension with 100 hours of community service and at least a 1,000 dollar fine.

These people are no different than drunks that are impaired and kill people and cause accidents while operating a motor vehicle.

I believe that anyone holding a cell phone while driving should be fined no less than $500 , Get 120 Hours of Community Service at a local E/R , and lose their driving privledges (license) for a MINIMUM of 90 days ... 1st Offense .

Each additional offense would be WORSE penalty yet.

For texting or talking on a cell phone while driving minimum fine $500. Required safe driving classes.

Causing an accident, $1000 fine and 90 days in jail suspension of drivers license for a year. With safe driving classes before return of license.

Causing an accident with bodily injurey to another or death, $50,000 to $200,000 fine, 1 year in jail or 5 years in jail if death occures and perminent loss of drivers license.

Judges with guts enough to enforce the laws to the full extent regardless

  • My personal take on this, being a motorcycle rider, is that anyone doing anything in addition to driving should lose their license for one year on the first offense, and permanently on the second. Things like eating, talking on a cellphone, texting, etc. distract one from the primary task of focusing all one's attention on driving. I've had people on cellphones ( especially young women, for some reason ) look me right in the eye and pull out in front of me.

The person should be tied to a pole at the side of a road, then have 100 cars drive past them on the road at top speed, while the drivers of those cars have to write a specific message on their mobile phone.
If this was to genuinely happen, they shouldn't have anything to worry about, since they think it's perfectly acceptable, but watch as they shit their pants at it actually happening, the hypocritical arseholes.

30 days in jail and a fine of $1000

I don't think there would be a second offense. Talking on cell phones while driving or texting (even worse) is selfish and potentially deadly. These people will end up killing someone. They need to be nipped in the bud. They believe rules are for everyone but them..they are wrong. :(

Two things, first, a fine. Probably $100 would suffice. Secondly, if they were texting and caused an accident, and someone was killed, fine and jail time.

The amounts of the fine and jail time would depend on the circumstances.

Text messaging is a technology that eludes me, eventhough I work in the field of Technology. I tell
my children and everyone else that I want to hear a human voice, not to read a few words typed in some sort
of code on a screen smaller than a pack of matches. I
think texting is highly overrated. It makes sense to use it when you're unable to call or stuck in a loud bar. There's a great line from the movie "He's Just Not
Into You". A woman tells another: "I had this guy leave
me a voice-mail, so I called him at home, and then he
e-mailed me to my Black Berry, and so I texted to his
cell, and now I just have to go around checking all these different portals just to get dumped by seven different technologies." But no one should text while
driving--that's a given. If people are using thumbs to
type-texting, that means they're driving with their
pinkies or their knees. And that sounds like failure to control and reckless operation to me. In my city the
City Counsil voted 19-2 to ban TWD. First time caught,
    $100, 2nd time $250. Each additional one is $500.

Tough call. It's definitely causing some very unsafe driving. I see people doing it all the time now - mostly young people. Fine them whenever possible. For multiple offenses (excessive), license revocation for a period of time. Cell phones and texting are the new bane on societal safety. People aren't even looking or using directionals because they're talking on the phone and won't even turn their head to check anymore. They've cut me off several times.

i know it is illegal on ALL military bases in the US.....

I think the current anger about driving while talking on the cell or texting is misplaced. I see people putting on make-up, shaving and reading the paper while driving.
The law should be broader-something like not taking either hand off the wheel for more than 15 seconds.

Short of installing a cell phone jammer in the offender's car, there isn't much that can be done to prevent someone from doing it again. Just give them fine that increases exponentially with each repeat.
