    They're equivalent.

    PATA stands for Parallel ATA.
    ATA stands for Advanced Technology Attachment, or simply AT Attachment.

    And there's SATA which stands for Serial ATA.

    Usually when you say ATA you're refering to PATA, so that's why they're equivalent in common usage.
