Should Abortion Be Legal?

The landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, which celebrated its 37th anniversary this month, was supposed to settle the question of abortion’s legality once and for all, but the Court’s ruling has instead become a fulcrum of debate. Placed squarely at the intersection of civil rights, health, religion and law, abortion is one of America’s most heated controversies. Should its legal status remain the same?

Illegal Abortion Hurts Women

Outlawing abortion does not necessarily reduce the number of abortions, but rather forces women to jeopardize their lives and health in order to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. In fact, in many countries where abortion is illegal but unintended pregnancy is widespread--such as Chile, Peru, Nigeria and the Philippines--the abortion rate is higher than in the United States, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

The World Health Organization estimates that 68,000 women worldwide die from unsafe abortions annually and millions more are injured, many permanently. When abortion was illegal in the United States (from the late 1800s until 1973), more pregnant women died of complications from self-induced abortions or abortions performed by untrained practitioners than from any other cause. By keeping abortion legal, we help protect the lives and health of women facing unplanned pregnancies.

Legal Abortion Promotes Health and Justice for Women

A woman's decision to have an abortion is based on many factors, including whether the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest, the inability to be financially responsible for a child and health complications. We support women in choosing the option that is best for them and their families.

Only when women are able to control their reproductive capacity can they achieve true equality in society. Ensuring safe, legal and accessible abortion care promotes health and justice for women. Countries that have legal abortion have safe abortion, and consequently, help ensure the health of women who choose to end their pregnancies. Women around the world are safer when governments recognize that the right to an abortion is a human right.

Politicians Shouldn’t Interfere in Private Medical Matters

Women should be trusted to make private medical decisions in consultation with their health care providers and those they choose to involve. Today, abortion is one of the most common and safest medical procedures, yet it is one of the only procedures subject to medically unwarranted, politically motivated scrutiny and restriction. Abortion restrictions inappropriately interfere with the doctor-patient relationship. Politicians’ personal agendas should not trump physicians’ professional judgment, expertise and experience.

Abortion Rights Are Pro-Life and Must Be Defended in Fundamental Terms

Today, no one is defending the right to abortion in fundamental terms, which is why the pro-abortion rights forces are on the defensive.

Abortion-rights advocates should not cede the terms "pro-life" and "right to life" to anti-abortionists. It is a woman's right to her life that gives her the right to terminate her pregnancy.

Nor should abortion-rights advocates hide behind the phrase "a woman's right to choose." Does she have the right to choose murder? That's what abortion would be, if the fetus were a person.

The Status of the Embryo in the First Trimester Is the Basic Issue

The status of the embryo in the first trimester is the basic issue that cannot be sidestepped. The embryo is clearly pre-human; only the mystical notions of religious dogma treat this clump of cells as constituting a person.

We must not confuse potentiality with actuality. An embryo is a potential human being. It can, granted the woman's choice, develop into an infant. But what it actually is during the first trimester is a mass of relatively undifferentiated cells that exist as a part of a woman's body. If we consider what it is rather than what it might become, we must acknowledge that the embryo under three months is something far more primitive than a frog or a fish. To compare it to an infant is ludicrous.

If we are to accept the equation of the potential with the actual and call the embryo an "unborn child," we could, with equal logic, call any adult an "undead corpse" and bury him alive or vivisect him for the instruction of medical students.

That tiny mass of protoplasm exists as a part of a woman's body. It is not an independently existing, biologically formed organism, let alone a person. That which lives within the body of another can claim no right against its host. Rights belong only to individuals, not to collectives or to parts of an individual.

("Independent" does not mean self-supporting--a child who depends on its parents for food, shelter and clothing has rights because it is an actual, separate human being.)

"Rights," in the words of philosopher-novelist Ayn Rand, "do not pertain to a potential, only to an actual being. A child cannot acquire any rights until it is born."

It is only on this basis that we can support the woman's political right to do what she chooses in this issue. No other person--not even her husband--has the right to dictate what she may do with her own body. That is a fundamental principle of freedom.

There Are Legitimate Reasons Why a Woman Might Have an Abortion

A rational woman might have an abortion for many legitimate reasons, such as accidental pregnancy, rape, birth defects or danger to her health. The issue here is the proper role of government. If a pregnant woman acts wantonly or capriciously, then she should be condemned morally--but not treated as a murderer.

If someone capriciously puts his cat or dog to death, that can well be reprehensible, even immoral, but it is not the province of the state to interfere. The same is true of an abortion, which puts to death a far less-developed growth in a woman's body.

If anti-abortionists object that an embryo has the genetic equipment of a human being, remember: so does every cell in the human body.

Abortions are private affairs and often involve painfully difficult decisions with life-long consequences. But, tragically, the lives of the parents are completely ignored by the anti-abortionists. Yet that is the essential issue. In any conflict it's the actual, living persons who count, not the mere potential of the embryo.

Being a parent is a profound, lifetime responsibility, financially, psychologically and morally. Raising a child demands time, effort, thought and money. It's a full-time job for the first three years, consuming thousands of hours after that--as caretaker, supervisor, educator and mentor. To a woman who does not want it, this is a death sentence.

Anti-Abortionists' Claim to Being ‘Pro-Life’ Is a Classic ‘Big Lie’

The anti-abortionists' attitude, however, is: "The actual life of the parents be damned! Give up your life, liberty, property and the pursuit of your own happiness."

Sentencing a woman to sacrifice her life to an embryo is not upholding the "right to life."

The anti-abortionists' claim to being "pro-life" is a classic “big lie.” You cannot be in favor of life and yet demand the sacrifice of an actual, living individual to a clump of tissue.

Anti-abortionists are not lovers of life--lovers of tissue, maybe. But their stand marks them as haters of real human beings.

Every Abortion Takes the Life of a Human Being

At the time of fertilization, when a sperm penetrates the "ovum" or egg cell, a new human organism comes into existence, with a complete and unique genetic code. This is a scientific fact, not a religious claim. Those who claim not to know "when human life begins" are making a political statement, not a scientific one. Human beings develop at an astonishingly rapid pace. The blood is circulating and the heart begins to beat at 21 or 22 days, and can be detected on ultrasound. By the end of the eighth week, the unborn child has developed all its organs and biological systems. Twenty weeks (five months) after fertilization, unborn children feel pain.

Some try to distinguish among human beings, arguing that some are worthy of respect (because they possess certain characteristics), while others are not. This assertion contradicts the basic premise of Western law and of our Constitution--the equality of all human beings. As the Declaration of Independence says, all human beings are created equal. It would be perilous to abandon this in order to adopt a philosophy that puts into the hands of some human beings (the powerful) the right to decide whether other human beings (the weak, the unpopular, the defenseless) are to be counted as members of the human family.

Women Suffer Physically and Psychologically After Abortion

Abortion can cause both short-term and long-term physical complications, and can significantly affect a woman’s ability to have healthy pregnancies subsequently. The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control have received reports of the deaths of 336 women from legal abortion between 1973, when abortion was legalized, and 2003. Physical complications included cervical lacerations and injury, uterine perforations, bleeding, hemorrhage, serious infection, pain and incomplete abortion. Long-term physical consequences of abortion include preterm birth and placenta previa (improper implantation of the placenta) in future pregnancies.

Additionally, a review of over 100 long-term international studies concluded that induced abortion increases risks for mood disorders enough to provoke attempts at self-harm. Researchers have also identified a pattern of psychological problems, known collectively as post-abortion syndrome, in which women may experience depression, anxiety, anger, flashbacks, guilt, grief, denial and relationship problems. The syndrome has been identified in research as a subset of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Abortion Has a Negative Impact on Communities and Society at Large

Despite “pro-choice” predictions to the contrary, the illegitimacy rate has increased significantly since Roe v. Wade. The percent of children born out of wedlock at the time of Roe was 15.5 percent, but by 2000 that number had increased to 33.2 percent, and by 2004, it increased to 36 percent. There is a high correlation between out-of-wedlock childbearing and a host of negative social indicators, such as pervasive child poverty.

Abortion also has contributed to population decline and demographic changes. The U.S. birth rate has dropped to the lowest level since national data has been available. In 2002 the birth rate fell to 13.9 per 1,000--down 17 percent since 1990. This results in a demographic shift to an older population known as "population aging," where the share of the population of working age shrinks and the labor force grows older. This demographic phenomenon will have negative effects on the economy, especially as workers reach retirement age, leaving fewer people engaged in productive work.

Abortion Kills Innocent Children

To discuss abortion rationally, we must first define it. While abortion advocates hide behind nebulous slogans like “pro-choice,” they never specify what “choice” we are talking about. Ironically, abortionists themselves have freely testified in court about what abortion is: the killing of babies by feeding them through a grinder, wrenching off their limbs, sucking out their brains and by lethal injection. Prenatal imaging now lets us see these same babies living, growing and playing early on in the womb. Embryology textbooks unanimously declare that each of our lives began at one decisive moment: the fertilization of sperm and egg. After fertilization, we surely exist and nothing is added to change what we are. Arguing that a human life begins later, such as when one becomes “self-aware,” is completely arbitrary. It reduces people to what they can do rather than who they are.

Killing an innocent baby is never justified, especially when killed by anyone who derives profit from the act. The womb, where nearly one in three are killed, has become the most dangerous place in America. The mere fact that a child is inside a woman doesn’t reduce him to sub-human status any more than your right to life changes depending on where you live. People are not valuable based on whether we want them, or whether they are “convenient.” No person’s life is worthless; and no one who profits from death should be able to determine the value of life.

Abortion Hurts Women

Abortion may be legal, but it is not safe. Abortion advocates regularly sue to stop laws that simply make abortion centers abide by the same health standards as real medical clinics. As a result, abortions are largely unregulated and unsupervised. Abortionists are typically the least-talented, most predatory practitioners in the medical field. Most real doctors don’t want to be involved in this dirty business. So, to increase the dwindling supply of death practitioners, pro-abortion groups agitate for laws that force health professionals to participate in and perform abortions. A popular myth, unsupported by evidence, is that tens of thousands of back-alley abortions occurred annually before Roe v. Wade. True, dangerous abortions did occur, but Roe did not stop them; it just allowed the same abortionists to hang their signs in the front window.

Abortion advocates contend that childbirth, a natural and healthy process, is more dangerous than abortion. The truth is, abortion injuries are underreported, and complications like ectopic pregnancy are often caused by previous abortions.

Women most often have abortions not because they are exercising “choice,” but because they feel they have no choice. Many are pressured into abortion by boyfriends, parents and sexual abusers who want to hide the evidence. And more than half of all the babies killed in abortion are girls. They are denied equal rights. Nearly every early feminist recognized that abortion is an insulting, degrading experience. Women deserve better.

Real ‘Choice’ Requires Truth

As is written in our Declaration of Independence, all human beings “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are Life….” Abortion advocates reject this and other fundamental American values, including truth and justice. Abortion is a degrading, painful procedure, and contrary to the “choice” rhetoric, many women pressured to abort truly want their babies to live. Abortion facilities profit off the plight of desperate women and hide facts that may lead women and girls to choose life. But abortionists would rather women suffer than their bottom line suffer.

The pro-life movement offers free help and real choices to women in need. They offer real care to women who want to continue school, need housing or need support for their life-giving choice. Abortion advocates do not want women to be aware of these life-affirming choices. Abortion advocates attack pro-life pregnancy centers in court. They sue to block laws that give women information about what abortion does, that let women see ultrasounds before abortion and that allow parents to protect minors from secret abortions. It is easy to tell the difference between a pro-life center and an abortionist. Just look at their ads--if an ad insists on cash, Visa or MasterCard, it is an abortion center. Pro-life services are typically free.

The founders of the abortion movement believed in eugenics--the elimination of the poor, non-whites and people with mental disabilities. Naturally, abortion centers are most commonly found in poor neighborhoods. African-Americans account for a vastly disproportionate number of aborted babies. The abortion industry is profit-hungry predator that thrives on disinformation, targets the most vulnerable and rejects true compassion for women and children.

- my mom had a kid when she was 18, he's my brother and we both beleive in reincarnation. She knew absolutely nothing about raising a child. and even though she had the best intentions she screwed him up bad and ruined her carreer and marriage because of it. I've talked to him about it and her and they both agree that everyone would have been alot better off if she had had an abortion. so I geuss my point is, by making abortion illegal you are forcing alot of families into situations they are NOT ready for. and yes, these mom's could put the kid up for adoption but you have no idea how hard that is to do in reality. when your pregnant your hormones, and body, and heart are all screaming at you to raise and love this child, but that does not mean you can. anyone who thinks abortion should be ilegal has clearly never kept a child that they were not cabable of caring for.

Women say it is their right because it is their body, but nothing could be further from the truth. It's their body that's carrying the baby but it isn't their body they are deciding to have killed. Every year millions and millions of babies are not born due to abortion. Let me ask you this, if you think abortion is so cool...are you glad to be alive?

I believe the legalization of abortion is hypocritical and denies the most innocent lives the very rights we fight for in this country. Every woman knows that pregnancy can result from sex, so she made that choice when she engaged in sexual activity. Why should the most vulnerable of our society suffer and die because a woman changed her mind once she knew she was pregnant?
On the other hand, I struggle with this issue when pregnancy results from rape or incest, or when a pregnancy is life-threatening to the woman.

  Right, because fetuses are definitely part of our society. They have names, personalities, educations, and social security numbers. And they suffer when they die because they are conscience beings with thoughts and feelings.

Yes, I am aware that when I engage in sexual activity, it can in fact lead to a pregnancy. But I have never had sex to get pregnant because I don't want children. I have no desire to ever have children. But that doesn't mean that I have no desire to have sex with my boyfriend. I love to have sex with him. Sex is amazing and orgasms have so many health benefits. You see, there are some of us women who don't want to reproduce. We actually are a part of society and we actually do have thoughts and feelings. I'll tell you one thing, it's all a lot easier to deal with if you've had an orgasm recently, and I personally prefer it if my boyfriend helps me have them.

  You can manipulate what I said all you wish. I don't care. I don't care that you like sex. Most of us do. However, a mature, adult woman needs to take responsibility for her decisions and actions. Every mature, adult woman in this country knows that engaging in sex can make her pregnant. If you choose to engage in any activity, no matter how enjoyable it may be, you are the one responsible for the outcome. So you basically are saying that it is OK to kill a baby that is unborn for the right to have an amazing orgasm, but not a baby that was born one hour ago? Are you saying that a fetus is not a part of the human race? A baby is a human being regardless of age or size. Reminds me of our not so long ago past, when people of color were legally considered less than human in order to prevent them from having the same rights as the white man.

  I am against the lawmakers and even some scientists that say that an unborn baby is not human in order to make abortion legal. I am against abortion because it kills innocent people.I am not a against a woman's right to her own body. I have the right to say no to sex any time I so choose. I also have the right to engage in sex if I so choose. I do not have the right to kill another human being whether they are visible to society or not.
  Did you know that abortions are performed all the way up to the ninth month of pregnancy? Did you know that late term abortion is performed in a way so that the baby comes out feet first so that he or she cannot take a breath and then they are stabbed at the base of the skull and their brains sucked out? The reason? Because of the law. A baby is not alive if it hasn't been born. Did you know that as far back as 25 years ago, Hospitals had the technology to save the life of a baby born at only 5 months of gestation? I was there to see it first hand. A friend had this little baby at five months of gestation who only weighed 2 lbs at birth. He felt pain, he cried, he moved and breathed. I tell you this, only to prove the point that a "fetus" is in fact a human with great potential.
  
  May we all, both small and great, enjoy the freedoms our country offers us. And may we all have the ability to open our eyes and see what we have done, and learn from it.

They say that when a girl has an abortion that she suffers from all kinds of mental problems and instability. That's bull shit. If she can't deal with not having a child, do you really think she would be able to deal with the responsibility of raising another human being? Not to mention, not all women who have abortions react that way. A lot of them go on to live their lives like normal. The ones who react that way were usually already mentally unstable (usually prior to abortion). They react that way because society instills in them the beliefs that they are MURDERERS!! That they are BAD PEOPLE because they just wanted to go on to live their own lives and accomplish they're own goals before bring another life into this world. If I had an abortion and I actually believed that bullshit, then I would probably have a mental breakdown too.

Just like that fact that if my parents would have never met and never had sex in the first place, I wouldn't give a damn because I would have never existed. Of course no one particularly wants to have an abortion. But if that's what needs to be done, then that's what needs to be done. I've met plenty of women who had abortions and some regretted not keeping it, yes, but most of the regretted getting pregnant in the first place. Most of them "did what they had to do." Besides, we all have regrets, that wasn't my point. I don't know if you read the article above by the Family Research Counsel but I was referring to the passage titled "Women Suffer Physically and Psychologically After Abortion..." most specifically that part where it says "studies concluded that induced abortion increases risks for mood disorders enough to provoke attempts at self-harm. Researchers have also identified a pattern of psychological problems, known collectively as post-abortion syndrome, in which women may experience depression, anxiety, anger, flashbacks, guilt, grief, denial and relationship problems. The syndrome has been identified in research as a subset of post-traumatic stress disorder." There is a huge difference between regretting something and having all of those type of mental problems. Besides, the point I was trying to make is that society tells girls that they are murderers and they're bad people, and they have no heart just just because they wanted to go on and live their lives like normal!!! Even if you do want to give up for adoption, the process of having a child takes an entire year of your life. Not to mention, I have never been pregnant but I have lived with women who were and it's not like its a walk in the park. It was hard living with a pregnant woman, I would never want to go through something like that.

I think that anybody should have the right to do anything they want to as long as they do not hurt another. A Fetus is not a person, but a developing embryo, in the case of abortion, this embryo is not wanted.

Haven't any of you illogical thinkers thought about how bad a life a child would have if it were to be brought up by a mother and father who don't even want it? You're hurting all 3 people in this situation, unlike if you were to just take it out before it is even alive.

Abortion should be legal, not because getting one or not getting one is right or wrong, But because no legal group of men or women has the right to enforce their religious belief on the women of their country. If we are a free nation, it is then indicative to allow our individual religious beliefs to be played out. So we must abid but such standards by allowing our people to practice in their own belief system and morals in such free country. Not everyone in country is the same. Allow the phrase " live and let live" say it all.

Yes it should because the embreo does'nt even think, it's not a person. Before it was legal, women were getting rid of the unborns themselves, which put their lives in danger. If it were to be made illegal again then women would go to backstreet abortion clinics, which would make the situation even worse.

Regardless of legality people will do things. Women will get abortions if they are legal or not. If they are illegal women will be forced to use back alley methods which may endanger her life.

The argument that abortion is murder is the same that not having sex every minute is murder, so many children that will never get even the chance to begin.

In order to murder someone that someone needs to be a person first, what defines a person from a finger, or a lock of hair other than the shape, thought. Free thought. A fetus may possess instincts and begin to form memories but I argue it does not have free thought.

It is not like the moment the sperm enters the egg the pinhead amount of cells say, "Oh whoa, I am alive, wow look at that. I wonder what great life is in store for me.". A fetus doesn't have such thoughts. It doesn't have dreams or goals in life either.

It isn't even aware of itself nor what it is. It is easy to think of a fetus as just a little child but doing so is really cheating yourself of the truth. Some scientists do not believe a child is even self-aware until the age of three.

Before that they do not understand what "me" is, nor can they separate themselves from the room they are in. So how could a fetus have any such thoughts, it simply doesn't.

It does have the potential to become a wonderful and beautiful child, as do all sperm and eggs but it isn't considered to be mass murder to join a church and remain celibate.

Regardless if it was a change of heart, a mistake, a rape, change in life situation, or unforeseen health risks the point is that mother either cannot care for that child, does not want that child, or may die from having that child.

So in the first two cases people suggest adoption, but adoption agencies and foster homes are already full of unwanted children. Why add more children to that already alarming problem? It is just making it harder on every other child who will now compete with this one, and this one will have to compete against them.

For example every person who gets a job, there is a person who won't because of it. There are only so many families, so many houses, so much food, so many resources, so many jobs to go around.

Everyone can't win, and every time you add one more person to the mix, you also add one more person who will lose, since there isn't enough as it is. And you want to add children to foster care? How does that not hurt all the children involved?

  I don't condone murdering adults because adults are people, they have thoughts, they are self-aware, they have ambitions, they already have their place in the world. A fetus, has none of these things.
  
  If a woman is seeking an abortion it means one of two things; 1) the mother does not want the child and wouldn't care for it, 2) the mother is unable to care for the child.
  
  The only option is foster care. You say this is perfectly alright, a life of misery and hopelessness is better than never being born...
  
  Some facts about foster care in the US:
  
  Every year, 26,000 young adults will leave foster care at age 18, they are ***never adopted***. The status of their education, employment, and housing is also not certain...
  
  "Youth in foster care often do not get the help they need with high school completion, employment, accessing health care, continued educational opportunities, housing and transitional living arrangements."
  
  "Studies of youth who have left foster care have shown they are more likely than those in the general population to not finish high school, be unemployed, and be dependent on public assistance."
  
  Every year 14,000 youth will leave the foster system due to other factors, such as running away or dying.
  
  So that is 40,000 youth, every year, who will never know a home, will never know what parents are like, who might never see a day of college, nor have a chance to excel at life. After having spent their life in foster care.
  
  Also 90% of all adoptions in the US have been and are of foreign children, only 10% of Americans adopt American children.

Fetuses are obviously conscience beings.
When they are aborted and murdered, the parents should hold funeral services for them.
In memory of the long eventful lives that they lived, and in remorse and in respect of their tragic deaths.
My friend had an abortion recently and I'll tell ya one thing, I havn't cried that hard in a long time.
I felt really bad for that fetus.
Especially because he/she died such a horrific death.
I say he/she because we don't really know what the sex was.
And it really brings me down when I think about what must have been going through his/her mind in those last moments.
That poor fetus.
And to think, he/she never even got to play with a toy (because fetuses are children and they do understand the joy that comes from playing from toys)
And he/she never got to ride the school bus (because fetuses are children and they have a conception of what school is and they understand emotions such as the excitement that comes from riding the school bus for the first time.)
And he/she never even got his/her first kiss (because fetuses are children and they have the ability to understand that children grow into young adults and kiss eachother)
And he/she never got experience life's wonderful pleasures, such as having sex and making fetuses (because fetuses have brains and they understand what sex is. They understand how the penis enters the vagina for pleasure and rarely for the purpose of making other fetuses. Fetuses also understand that before they were fetuses, they were embryos, and before that, they were a sperm and an egg. They even understand that after they are fetuses, they will be infants, and then babies, and then toddlers...and so on. That is why when babies are born, they have a perfect conception of life, how it is created, and how it can be ended. They learned it all when they were still an embryo. That's also why there is no such thing as the sex talk.)
And I'll tell ya what, if I were that fetus, I'd be pretty pissed at my mother for murdering me (because like I said earlier, fetuses have a conception of life, death, and all that can happen inbetween. They understand this from all of their experiences in the womb.)

  My position is not arbitrary at all. America has laws that say a mother cannot kill her child after it is born. America has laws that say you cannot neglect your child after birth. But if all you want to do is make unmeritorious comments, or offer deflections, then there is no purpose in having a conversation. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if that opinion lacks all logic. So if you want to believe you are emperor with the right to dictate who lives and dies, that is your right. Your opinion will not make it true, but again, you have the right to any arbitrary opinion you want.
  
  But all of us logical people would prefer to have an intelligent informed discussion on issues of public policy.

This is a very tricky subject for me, I have read above and can see BOTH sides and can almost agree to both too. What I don't agree is fundamentalists on either side. I don't like the term pro-life, that seems to point the finger at those who chose to have an abortion as being ant-life and that is just not true, they made a choice for the best and these choices are never easy. Its uncomfortable for me because I had an abortion at 19 and I WAS very much pressured into it. But I also know I had no money, support, experience and was not mentally stable enough to cope with a baby and that baby and me would have struggled throughout that time. I hear and have been told that it was at the time just a bunch of cells which helps a little to relieve some of the pain and guilt I still go through. Somehow word got out I had an abortion and I have been judged and thought of as a murderer and it was very VERY painful and humiliating. But sometimes the guilt tells me they were right and abortion should not have been an option and I would have had a baby. A big part of me wanted to and regrets what I did, and although I was pressured to do it, I have to take responsibility for it. All I can say now is that I learned to take what happened very seriously and if I were to get pregnant now then there would be no decisions to be made, I would have it. I personally think that abortion is an easy option in the system to take, and maybe too ready available. But young girls will never understand the mental and emotional scar it leaves and this was never discussed. I DO think it is a woman's right to chose and in certain circumstances such as rape, it should be available. But if more time was taken in the process and the system, say putting to woman/girl to a counsellor to discuss in full the whole situation, then maybe abortion would be taken more seriously and each decision was a fully conscience one. Abortion CAN seem like an easy way out, but from my experience it was just awful and something I will never repeat again.

Having said that, none of us are free from sin, we all sin, ME INCLUDED and we all make mistakes ME INCLUDED and only God Himself can judge us. Only Jesus Himself is free from sin. When I posted my last comment, I had not read your comment on your own experience. I understand now, why your comment back to me seemed harsh. You were young and you made a mistake. You said you are not a christian, but, YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD AND GOD LOVES YOU JUST AS MUCH AS HE LOVES ME AND EVERYONE ELSE. God knows our mistakes and He knows our hearts, He knows your heart. Talk to Him and ask Him to forgive you AND HE WILL, and then, YOU FORGIVE YOUR SELF. I pray that one day you will come to love The Lord Jesus as I do and then, you will realize just how much He loves you.

Murder's illegal. Why should abortion be different? Some people don't even want their kids AFTER they're born.. but it doesnt give them the right to kill them.
1) maybe embryos arent scientifically considered humans, but they have potential to be. You were an embryo weren't you? I guarantee you that 100% of people who are pro-choice were already born.Plus, dogs aren't human, that doesn't mean we kill them.
2) It isn't the mother's right, just because it's in her power. It's in her body, but it's not HER. You can't kill a child, why should the fact that the child is inside the womb make it legal?
3) There's such thing as adoption. And if you say that "oh well a lot of kids get lousy adoptive parents and end up miserable anyways." Yeah well I bet you that if the babies inside the womb had a voice they'd rather live and possibly end up in a bad environment than not live at all.
4) If you can't financially support a kid, you should have thought about that before you decided to lay around. It's your problem, not the child's. Take responsibility for your actions. Eliminating the "issue" is immoral. Don't eliminate it, learn to deal with it.
5) If you got raped, again.. ADOPTION. It's a sad reality, because you didn't choose to get pregnant.. so you got hurt and now you can kill someone right? wrong. Again with the right to life.
6) Afraid of death by child-birth? Well that's a different story. Now you're choosing your life or the baby's, but that's where it's really based on your morals. I know I would jump a bullet for someone, and I know people who would jump a bullet for me. Now of course that's a much harder decision, but that's when you prioritize. If you've lived already, then wouldn't be more unfair to kill someone who wasn't even born yet?

- 1) Before we were an embryo we were an egg or sperm and these are considered by nature, by our own bodies as disposable.
  2)Its NOT a child in the womb unless it is fully grown. For those who abort early it IS actually just a bunch of cells which can potentially grow to be a human as you already said in point one!
  3) Adoption. It IS an option but would you/could you actually make the choice to give away your fully grown baby to someone else, knowing they will be growing up without their real mother? Its not that easy.

People have sex before marriage, it happens but we need to be more careful and when your young, your foolish and there are far too many teenage pregnancies around. But "learning to deal with it" is a VERY harsh statement, this a another human being we are talking about, growing and maturing and needing food, love, support, time, shelter and a stable environment. And what is the person has been raped? what is she was just a child herself, your telling her to just "deal with it" won't help anyone in the end!
  5) So... you think if someone who gets raped all of a sudden has an OBLIGATION to continue to grow that embryo into a human and give it away and THAT makes it all ok? what about that baby when it grows up? when it wants to find its real mother, when it finds out it was was only given away but was in fact never wanted and conceived through a brutal attack! I don't know about you, but I don't think I could live with that knowledge.
  6) Its one thing killing a person or a baby, but a pregnancy its its early stages is not yet a baby and no where NEAR a person. So your saying if someone finds out that they are say 2 weeks pregnant, that they have conceived but know they wouldn't survive and could in fact DIE in nine months SHOULD continue the pregnancy because YOU believe it would be selfish not to? That is even more sick then what YOU believe to be murder. Who are you to say that a woman or even a young girl should give up her own life to continue a pregnancy os something that IS NOT EVEN HUMAN YET? THAT is just CRAZY!
  
  However I do see SOME of where you are coming from and I don't believe 100% in abortion. I believe the choice should be a very hard one but sometimes it just seems like an easy way out. I think that abortion should be illegal after a few weeks of pregnancy, it seems you can abort in much later stages that I don't think is right. I think all woman thinking about abortion should be made to see a counsellor to really discuss in depth the whole situation. But no matter what it will never be easy either way, the debate will always go on and I agree with both sides in many ways. But I do NOT agree with the fundamentalist judgmental attitude with pointing the finger and calling it murder. I could say the same thing about people that eat meat because I personally believe ANY killing is murder BUT I do NOT go about calling people that! Its a sad and painful world and we need to support each other, and stop judging!

I say yes for certain cases,
If you were raped, it wasn't your fault, so yes.. but I would still hope you would keep the child to let it be born, then put it up for adoption; it may not have the greatest of chances, but at least it would have a chance.
If the child will kill you, well, that's an unfortunate fact of life, so yes.

Otherwise, no, it's your fault, even if you used protection.
Therefore, you aren't allowed to abort it.

If it's what the majority of people what - then it should remain legal. My advice to those who don't like it is to say - "then don't have one", and to leave the rest of those who do want them to live there lives in peace.

Frankly I have no use for abortions and will never have one - but I can understand why those who want the option available support it. It's a real pity that so many are so intolerant to the wishes of the majority and can't just live their own lives in peace and with respect to the wishes of others.

I'm not sure if you read both sides of the article above but there is a part where the Family Research Council writes about what is called "Post Abortion Syndrome" .."in which women may experience depression, anxiety, anger, flashbacks, guilt, grief, denial and relationship problems". ...That is so sad. Some women actually have to deal with emotional problems like that because of people like you calling them MURDERERS because they wern't ready to have children. You know what Post Abortion Syndrome should consist of? Freedom. Happiness. Success. Being able to actually pursue goals. Of course, I don't want children of my own so someone else would have to take it but keeping it alive would be fine by me. It's not that I want to kill anything, but I REFUSE to carry someTHING inside me for nine months, causing me to gain 30 to 50 pounds, go through all of the shit that pregnancy consist of, go through LABOR, then give it away, and spend the next 3 to 6 months recovering hormonally, emotionally, and physically, and then spending the next 2 years recovering from stretch-marks. Ya, I DON'T THINK SO.

She lost her job via layoff, along with her medical insurance. Any insurance she can purchase won't cover the medicine because it is a "Pre-existing condition.". She has gone through a lifetime of wealth and credit to pay for the medication on her own. The pharmeceutical company dosen't seem to care that she will die without the medication that they have sitting on a shelf, collecting dust. Who is doing the killing? The disease, meanwhile the pharmeceutical company has collected a small fortune over 5 years in nothing less than extortion. The company is as good as killing her themselves and using thier own greed as an excuse.

  Again, the medicine does not just sit on a shelf. Pharmaceutical companies only make enough medicine to fill the orders of its customers. Pharmacies only buy enough medicine to meet the demands of its customers.
  
  I think what you mean to be arguing is that the pharmaceutical companies have the ability to make enough medicine for people like your sister, but they don’t. But the problem with your argument is that this medicine you speak of only exists because companies have a profit motive to invent it. Moreover, pharmaceutical companies have less than 20 years to make a profit on its invention before it becomes public domain.
  
  Thus, the question you have to ask is whether it is better for this medicine to NOT EXIST, or better for it to be expensive for several years.

Once the drug has been brought to market, pharmaceutical often face hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees defending lawsuits (often frivolous) surrounding their products.
  
  Although I understand why you have the viewpoint you do, the bottom line is that you are arguing a wholly illogical viewpoint. Pharmaceutical companies make very little profit in relation to their shares. New drugs do not exist until someone invents them. Inventing drugs requires expensive skilled labor and a lot of trial an error. Once a drug in invented, it needs to go through expensive clinical trials before being approved by the FDA.
  
  So how is it the pharmaceutical companies are greedy, yet you are not? Do you work for free? Did your sister? Do you invest your money an actually expect a return on that investment?

- By the way, thatguyted, I'm currently getting my license to be an insurance agent and as in your sister's case, when you work for a company that provides insurance and you get fired you can still keep your insurance by converting it from a group policy to an individual policy, WITHOUT having to prove insureability. The premium is usually more expensive for an individual policy but she could have legally kept her insurance. I don't know how long ago she was fired, and every state has their own laws and regulations as to how long you have to convert it. But perhaps she should look into that. Maybe she could get her insurance back.

- MissChelsea: Your comment is only partially correct. Everyone is able to keep their insurance (if you were not fired for gross misconduct) based on federal law. The law is called the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), and it allows a person who loses coverage as a result of termination of employment (and a few other situations) to keep your coverage by paying the premium. This can last for 6 to 18 months, depending on the situation. And the amount you pay is the same amount that was being paid on your behalf when you were working. Of course, this could be a lot if your employer paid a large part of your premiums.

And I suppose I should have been more specific, quite often, the employer does pay part of the premium. Sometimes they pay 75% of it. Thank you for correcting me.

- In this case COBRA lasted 6 months, costing her $5600, 103% of her employer's cost (The employer is allowed to add on a small fee.). Even though that was cheaper than paying for the drug outright, it didn't last long and consumed the severance. In America it's the Dollar that is God. Get it or be damned.

- I am not a christian but I do think I will real out this quote "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" WHO are you to judge and where do you get the nerve to publicly humiliate people who have made a very difficult decision???? Of course no one would kill a sleeping baby in its cot but THIS is not a baby and remember that, its a bunch of cells that have the potential to become a baby. This doesn't make it any easier on the woman/girl though. I think if you feel that strongly about the issue then maybe do something to help/support or encourage woman to think harder about their decision to abort, but don't go around pointing fingers, calling them murderers and judging them! According to YOUR beliefs the ONLY one that should be judging is your god! And I also have to say its VERY easy to judge when you haven't been in the situation yourself!

  Daydreamer: who are you to decide when a person is enough of a person to have rights? Remember, even full grown adults are nothing more than a bunch of cells. In fact, the number of cells that make up the human body continually increase until adulthood. Thus, why is it not okay to kill a one year old, or five year old? They, too, are just a bunch of cells that will continue to grow.
  
  Whether you oppose abortion based on religion, or you oppose it because you just think killing is wrong, the bottom line is you are killing another human when you abort. You can arbitrarily decide that a human before birth does not deserve to live, but your arbitrary decision is no more right than a person who arbitrarily decides that a child before age two has no right to live.

Abortion is so debated because it kills someone unborn......yes unborn and after that u don't care wheather the child dies after birth due to hunger and other poor living conditions..all u want is another birth. Those human rights organisations donot care a damn about what the child will face after the birth. Infact, if this is to be debated at all, then it should be after we make a better world for them to live in.

Abortion should most definitely be legal. Yes it is a human life. but what if the mother had been raped? Then is it fair to make her have her rapist's baby?!? Making abortion illegal won't make people stop doing it, it will only make it more unsafe and will more likely kill women. Making abortion illegal won't save lives, it will just waste more and more.

Reading the “NO” side of this argument was really great, I learned quite a bit about abortion. Let me tell you in my paragraph by paragraph analysis:
1. Five months after fertilization, unborn children feel pain. It’s too bad that most abortion clinics don’t perform abortions after this time because then we could be murdering something that could feel instead of a boring old painless death.
2. Those Prolife people are so kind and morally upright. The Family Research Council says that because they’re so generous, they treat all human beings equally; they think it’s unethical to have the Powerful decide whether or not the Defenseless live. It really doesn’t make sense to have laws that allow women to decide if they want to have a child because that means that they would be in a powerful position, which is understandably dangerous to all of the Defenseless out there. Instead, all power should be handed over to people who detest power; only then can they decide that the defenseless should live. They must be really strong if they can tolerate doing the one thing they hate: controlling the fate of another.
3. Three-hundred and thirty-six women have died of legal abortion from 1973 to 2003. This means that for thirty years, there were about 11.2 deaths per year from legal abortion. It’s reassuring to see that such upstanding Americans would care about the deaths of 336 women out of around 304,060,000 people living in the United States who made a conscious and willing decision to murder the defenseless being inside of them. Like any cold-blooded murderer, they deserve a chance at life.
4. Women can suffer post-abortion syndrome, which is a subset of post-traumatic-stress disorder. It’s obviously more serious to suffer from this than post-partum depression; therefore, we should make women become depressed while having a child to take care of instead of suffering the depression all alone.
5. In 1973, the time of the Roe vs. Wade case, 15.5% of children were born out of wedlock and the numbers increased to 36% in 2004. There is also a high correlation between these out-of-wedlock births and unfortunate social conditions such as pervasive child poverty. This means that the Roe vs. Wade case single-handedly increased the illegitimacy rate among people who suffered from pervasive child poverty. Therefore, we can conclude that the Supreme Court declaring abortion to be legal in the eyes of the Constitution made people who engaged in pre-marital sex more willing to go through with their pregnancy rather than blasphemously murdering the defenseless.
6. It appears that the birthrate fell 17% from 1990 to 2002. The Alliance Defense Fund concludes that this caused population aging that will be detrimental to our economy’s well-being when old people retire. Thus, I am forced to conclude that Roe vs. Wade is the reason why young people are able to get jobs; clearly if not enough young people are being born, there should be a lot jobs available to them when senior employees retire. There is one flaw in my theory: I think that the economy’s current terrible condition is preventing young people from getting jobs. Damn, I guess abortion, or lack thereof, isn’t related to economic crises.
7. Abortion reduces people to what they can do rather than who they are. That statement alone has so many bases in fact; she even said “rationally” in the same paragraph! How could something like that be false? I’ve realized that all along, I’ve been hiding behind nebulous slogans like “pro-choice.” For those of you who don’t speak crazy, this means that I never specified what choice I was talking about, and neither have other “pro-choicers.” At the same time, fellow abortionists have freely testified in court the exact specifications of how they intended on brutally slaughtering human beings growing in the womb.
8. The womb is dangerous. Somehow, people profit from killing innocent babies who aren’t classified as sub-human. This profit may or may not be defined through economic significance. These anti sub-human, yet valuable, creatures must be saved from the evil womb because no person’s life is worthless. Basically, (what I gathered from this nonsensical paragraph) profit doesn’t mean value because profit is bad but value is good. The womb is dangerous because babies are killed in there, but we shouldn’t save them from the womb because it is also a shelter: a dangerous shelter. Fetuses aren’t sub-human because they live in this dangerous shelter and they are also people who are put on the value and profit scale when they shouldn’t be put on the profit scale because profit is bad, just like the womb.
9. (At this point, I’m already getting tired of this article, so…) Roe vs. Wade forced doctors to perform abortions that they didn’t want to do. Back alley abortions were very common before this case. Consequently, back alley abortionists were turned into doctors.
10. Ectopic pregnancy is often caused by having so many abortions. This is because of the scar tissue that develops when the wound heals. There is a lot of scar tissue because of these back alley abortionists turned doctors. Ectopic pregnancy is the only danger involved in childbirth, a natural and healthy process.
11. Women are pressured by their boyfriends, parents, and sexual abusers who want to hide the evidence (wtf?). Abortion is causing women to feel like they have no choice. In the olden days, a woman would be punched in the stomach by her abusive boyfriend if she didn’t want a baby. Nowadays these abusers would rather make their wives get an abortion. Therefore, abortion’s legalization has caused abusive boyfriends to be nicer to their girlfriends. Early feminists hated abortion, but current feminists are idiotic because they’re for it. This is because early feminists know that removing a fetus from the uterus directly would kill it, while being punched in the uterus wouldn’t guarantee death.
12. Abortionists are secretly entering a low pay job just because they want to profit off of women suffering. Even though they incessantly interrogate women about their decision to have an abortion, they are hiding facts, plain and simple. Those women are almost as evil as the womb.
13. The “pro-choicers” choose to hide the efforts of the “pro-life” movement to provide helpless women life-affirming choices and schooling. There are obviously a lot of laws blocking women from seeing their ultrasound when they get an abortion. Forget the fact that abortionists often ask a woman if she wants to see her ultrasound before she slaughters the baby in her dangerous womb. The obvious difference between an abortion center and a Pro-life center is that abortion centers ask you to pay to kill babies while Pro-life centers are completely free. Excuse me, typically free.
14. The abortion industry has succeeded in weeding out all of the poor and ethnically diverse members of the population. In fact, that’s why the clinics are in poor neighborhoods. According to this argument, poor, black people get a lot of abortions, so I suppose that the ultimate goal was met.

let's break it down shall we? let's just say that someone approaches you on the street and tells you that there a potential human human been now growing inside you for four weeks. This human being though it does not currectly have emotions nor the ability to feel pain nor even a funtioning brain. This person tells you that if you'd like they can get rid of this little person so that you do not have to worry about raising the child or putting it up for aboption. of course anyone at this point would say "yes, i'll have it I don't mind I'm sure I can find a home for it if i can't raise it. But then the person tells you that in the process of carrying this child you will suffer from many aches and pains, vicious mood swings, and a daily vomiting process for three months. and giving birth to this will be the most excrucetating thing you will likely ever experience, because human beings have the most painful and dangerous child birthing process in the animal kingdom, due to the largness of our heads and narrowness of our hips. still at this point many would say "its okay, its all temporary." but then the person tells you that you will become extremely attached to baby while its inside you making it likely you will fall into a vicious depression after it is gone, also likely making you wonder for the rest of your life how is this child doing now? But that's not all your body will also change in such severe ways that it is you will likley receive ugly stretch marks and its likely your body will never bounce back completely, or never bounce back at all (e.g: you used to be skinny but you will never be again). he says its even possible that you will be left with a hideous scar across your stomach. at this point most people will have excepted his offer. but not you, your not that superficial, so you say I'll still do it. "alright" he says, but one thing there is a .01% chance that this will kill you (small yes, but its a chance none the less). and here's the kicker! even if you agreed to all that there is over 50% chance that this child will not even make it to term (I looked it up. So ask yourself honestly and completely, put aside all thoughts of religion and morality, and ask yourself would you do it?

so given all of the risks and difficulties i have named, do you honestly not think that every woman has the right to decide whether to put herself through this or not? If you don't think she has this right than you should be living a communist country where 60,000 to 100,000 women die every year from botched abortions that they were forced to seek out simply because they did not want to put themsleves through this extremely difficult experience.

  1) You assume that the number of births will still stay constant regardless of whether abortion is legal or not.
  
  2) You assume that all children born to a mother who would have aborted will end up for adoption.
  
  3) You are misquoting your own data source. According to your own source, there have been 981 million abortions from 1920 through October 2008.

- Of course. As I discussed in the other thread, life is not black and white. Your question is akin to asking is it ever okay to kill? I would agree that it is wrong for me to kill you because I don’t like you, but it is okay for me to kill you if necessary to defend myself or when a person has been adjudicate guilty of a heinous crime.
  
  The abortion issue is identical. The issue is competing rights. In fact, allow me to apply your toxic waste comment to this situation. In the other thread you said that I can choose to store toxic waste on my property so long as doing so does not affect your property. The same philosophy applies here. A mother can do whatever she wants to her body, so long as her actions do not affect her child.
  
  Of course, as I also pointed out, in life we often run into competing rights. Accordingly, if the only way to save the mothers life is to abort the child, then the mother should have that right (just as I should have the right to kill in self defense).

  Sort of. Again, the law should track the laws dealing with homicide. When there are competing rights, you have to balance the equities. However, when one person wants to arbitrarily decide when another life lives or dies, that should be banned.

I am against late term abortions but I do feel that a women should have the right to choose. Every situation is different...its not all about black and white and yes and no. It may come as a surprize to many, but the fact is that murder is NOT illegal because it is immoral. Murder is illegal because it is harmful to ordered society, it tends to generate vengeance and vendettas and can (in extremis) decimate a nation (eg: Iceland in the 12th century). It may be that religions declare murder immoral for the same reasons, but that is irellevant. The point is that Morality do not and should not dictate the law. They are separate rule systems, one secular and the other spiritual.

So I have no problem with religious people declaring abortion to be immoral, they have every right to do that, just as they have every right to say it is immoral and blasphemous to say "God damn it". But they really should remember that their morality apply only to those who subscribe to it (members of their religion). Others are in no way bound by THEIR morality, just as non-Jews are in no way required to wear a yarmulke and have 4 tassels on their shirt.

which gives us some actual data about abortions and who have them done. I would recommend you read it all, but one item is so noteworthy that I will repeat it here

1) Abortion rates have been steadily declining in the USA while Roe vs Vade. has been in effect. see: Part I, Finding #2

As a curiosum I can tell you that abortion rates here in Denmark (where abortion is not just legal, but also free of charge and unencumbered by mandatory counseling) have been even lover, while descending in a similar pattern.

Abortion should not be decided by a large group of people. Abortion should be legalized in every state because women can make up their own minds. For every single one of you that voted "NO" to making it legal take a minute and think about if you had a 16 year old daughter. One night while out with her friends perhaps at the movies. She gets up and goes to the restroom and while doing so she is raped in the bathroom stall. You are horrified by this incident, but you are very thankful she is still alive. Then you find out that she is now pregnant because she was raped and abortion is illegal so she is stuck with it. Every time she looks into her child's eyes she remembers the violent raping in that bathroom. If abortion were legal then she would not have that child, but she could then have a child with someone she loves causing her to forget that night. Now every time she looks into her child's eyes she will think about how lucky she is to have this child with the love of her life. Stop and think about the life of the woman who has the decision to make and not the life of the fetus in her womb.

Abortion will happen whether it's legal or not, why subject woman to the old fashion back alley coat hanger method? We are far more evolved than that. It is a woman's body and therefore a woman's right. A full grown woman, who is able to conceive is also able to decide for herself. Her rights far outweigh that of a mass of cells that cannot think, remember or even know of it's existence. We don't even remember the first few years of our lives, a 12 week old lump of cells is not going to suffer any great deal of stress from being aborted. Any developement it has, lungs, fingernails, whatever, it is not going to feel pain... it is not a developed human yet. People make mistakes. While abortion should most definately not be a means of birth control, a 16 year old girl should not be forced to give up her entire life over something that is not even a life yet. Hell a 25, or 35 year old should not be forced to have a child if not ready. If you were to take a newborn baby and kill it, that is murder. Aboring a 12 week old fetus is NOT EVEN CLOSE TO MURDER!!!! IT IS NOT A HUMAN YET! The world is not all peachy and there our people with severe addictions that cannot just stop on their own. Should they go on and give birth to a retarded child and then not be able to care for it? There are enough people who have children and don't take care of them properly. Why force a woman to have a child that she doesn't want? Is that really a way to bring a child into this world?

  The argument is made over and over, but is usually always proven false. In fact, I recently saw someone who wrote “people will smoke pot anyway, so we should just legalize it). Of course, reality proves them wrong. Only 7% of people regularly smoke pot. Most people don’t do it because it is illegal.
  
  Moreover, your point presumes that banning abortion will maintain the status quo among number of conceptions. What makes you think this is true?

- Actually it's been well documented in textbooks, biographies and documentaries. Woman would go to doctors illegally and suffer many complications as a result- infertility, infection, ect. If you think this never happened, your ignorant. Look it up, it's well documented.
  I never said conception rates would stay the same, yes they probably would decrease as people would be more careful. But sometimes people use condoms and other methods and still end up pregnant. I personally have never had an abortion (condoms have done me well!) but if I had of gotten pregnant at 17 or 18, do you think I'd be dropping out of school and forgetting about post-secondary education to raise a child I didn't want and wasn't emotionally or financially prepared for? HELL NO.
  
  And as for smoking marijuana, I don't know where you live, your poor thing but us here in Canada are a lot more relaxed towards it. 48% of us smoke it, and that's according to statistics Canada who poll the public and are accurate 19 times out of 20 within 4%. It should be legal. Alcohol is legal and it's 10 times more destructive than marijuana ever was. But that's a whole different argument. Those of you who say people with my beleifs have no morals need to get out of your little Christian bubble and get some life experience. You can be a decent, loving human being and ALSO smoke weed and beleive that abortion is a woman's right. SHOCKER!

  No, I am just smart enough to point out your fallacy. The issue is not has it ever happened. Rather, the issue is whether or not it is prevalent enough to warrant a change in public policy.
  
  And the reality is that, even when abortion was illegal, there is no evidence that it is very prevalent. In fact, most sources indicate that back alley abortions are as prevalent today as they were when abortion was illegal. So do you have any evidence to support your argument, or you just arguing ignorance as fact?

  Which just proves my point. Marijuana is legal in Canada (although I know there is a dispute about this, but most Canadians believe it to be so). Most people are law abiding. Thus, when the law says something is prohibited, most people will obey the law.

  I have never said anything such thing, but what do morals have to do with anything? Where do morals come from? Well, the two most common sources are religion and law. Morality is 100% subjective.

Well...it is murder,but it's also good population control.
My advice- Don't have unprotected sex if you don't want kids. less pregnant teens= less abortions.

lotteyH, that is so sad. My heart breakes for your brother. To have his mother say she would have been better off aborting him, is heart breaking. He is your brother, embrace him, love him, tell him you love him. He is a child of God, a gift from God, as we all are and he has as much right to life as every other person. God loves him.

A lot of people have good points - I would like to say fetuses are NOT people they don't know or care if they are "murdered" if I was aborted it wouldn't matter because I wouldn't know and I agree with the fact that whether you wanted to get pregnant or not, it happens and you should be, as a responsible adult, prepared to face them but if you are a person not ready to take care of a baby and are just going to ruin it's life and yours plus who knows how ever many other peoples not to mention it hurts all of us paying taxes for welfare and others when they go to the emergency room because they can't afford health insurance for a baby they can't care for plus the baby may die anyway once it's brought up in poverty. POINT IS let who ever is pregnant make this choice for themselves it should not be up to you or me.
